‘Embarrassing’ defensive melt down sends Tigers to 16-4 loss in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – It was ugly, a sloppy seminar of how not to play defense. It was horrible, the way the Detroit Tigers threw the ball around on Thursday night at Kauffman Stadium, the way they overran the ball, the way they could not place the simplest of tags on the slowest of catchers. Then again

Tigers better defensively in RF sans J.D. Martinez, though bat a big loss

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Detroit Tigers may be a better team this season without J.D. Martinez.  That seems preposterous, given that he was batting .305 with 16 home runs and 39 RBI in 57 games before being traded to the Diamondbacks for three infield prospects on Tuesday.  But Martinez ranked as one of

Red Wings and reps for Tomas Tatar in arbitration

An arbitration hearing between the Detroit Red Wings and agents for Tomas Tatar is under way.  The hearing was scheduled to start 9 a.m. in Toronto. The sides can continue to talk privately even as the hearing continues. Last year the Wings and the agent for Petr Mrazek were about an hour into an arbitration hearing when they reached a deal without the arbitrator.  At 26, Tatar is a year from unrestricted free agency, which is why arbitration is locked into a one-year contract. The Wings offered $4.1 million in their arbitration brief. Tatar’s side asked for $5.3 million. An arbitrator is likely to land in the middle, around $4.8 million. That would come close to the $4.75 million average annual

Easy part over, Al Avila’s handling of Tigers’ Justin Wilson crucial

The first step was easy — a no-brainer. In comparison to what’s coming. Detroit Tigers general manager Al Avila traded rightfielder J.D. Martinez on Tuesday for three infield prospects and a bunch of uncertainty. Trading Martinez was understandable, if not inevitable. It had to be done because the
